I get asked this a lot, and I can tell you that many that have been diagnosed with Fibromyalgia that have eradicated gluten from their diets have experienced their symptoms lessening. So is there a link?

It’s clear that gluten sensitivities and other foods cause their own set of symptoms or may exacerbate the symptoms of fibromyalgia. But there is simply not enough research to determine if the two are totally related.

Since many of the symptoms of Fibromyalgia are similar to gluten intolerance (and even Celiac’s Disease) it is commonly misdiagnosed. Of course when this happens, and people remove the gluten from their diets, the symptoms often subside.
If you have Fibromyalgia or another auto-immune disorders, you may consider a trial of eliminating gluten from your diet and see if your symptoms improve. It’s not like the body needs gluten at all, and in the last few years, there’s been an explosion in foods that taste great and are completely gluten free, making eating gluten free easier than ever.

Kim Wirth is a registered nurse in Austin, Texas with significant experience helping people to live full lives without the presence of gluten in their diets. Send her questions at kwwirth@yahoo.com

There is little to no nutritional benefits whatsoever from anything made from refined white flour (in fact, Arnold Schwarzenegger called it “White Death”). We already know that it (along with refined white sugar in mass quantities) is a leading cause of obesity and type II Diabetes over the long term. So if you’ve been thinking of eliminating these items from your diet, you’ll get nothing but support from me.

In some people (about 23 percent of the population), these foods cause symptoms such as abdominal pain, gas, bloating and diarrhea–and it doesn’t just come from refined white flour, it comes from whole grains as well (so if you’ve switched to whole grain wheat bread and still have these symptoms, think gluten-. sorry–but it still has gluten).

Gluten is a protein found in wheat, rye, and barley, is the common denominator in most of the grain-based products we eat, such as cereals, breads, and pasta, and your body may have a difficult time metabolizing the gluten in these foods.

It is not a true allergic response, and it does not cause permanent damage to the intestines. But it generally does worsen over time.
Simple gluten intolerance can be uncomfortable, but the symptoms typically don’t last long. The good news is that gluten intolerance is not a food allergy, and eating gluten does not usually cause damage – unless you have celiac disease.

Unfortunately, there is no reliable test for gluten intolerance, but there is for Celiac’s disease. If you suspect that your symptoms are caused by gluten, you may consider a trial of simply eliminating it from your diet and see if they subside.

If you’re symptoms are more severe, or you suspect that you may have Celiac’s disease, you might want to be tested by your doctor. Words of warning, Don’t eliminate gluten from your diet though, because if you do, the test will be inconclusive since the test requires gluten to be causing a reaction in your system for it to show up.

Seasons are changing. The back to school hustle is being replaced with the excitement of Fall. Eager kids everywhere are anticipating Halloween fun while parents strive to create a healthy and delicious lunches and snacks. It is a real challenge, but when kids have special dietary needs, it is even harder. Gluten-free options can be difficult because there are many restrictions. Don’t discount whole grains.
They are a great option, especially for Gluten-free eaters.
Whole grains are power houses of nutrition, containing all three parts of the kernel (germ, endosperm and bran). The refining process normally removes the bran and the germ, leaving only the endosperm. Without the bran and germ, about 25% of a grain’s protein is lost, along with many key nutrients. Whole grains are healthier, providing more protein, more fiber and many important vitamins and minerals.
Arzu is a great source of whole grains. Each serving, for example has 30grams of whole grains, nearly 2/3 of daily recommendations. Arzu makes eating your daily grains easy and fun. Try Arzu as a warm breakfast cereal with your favorite fresh fruit. Our Chai Honey Nut Granola, recipe included below, is a healthy choice for your favorite lunch box. Oven fried chicken covered with Southwest Arzu is a quick and easy dinner option. Make a few extras for tomorrow’s lunch box. Ever thought of including some whole grains in your dessert? What about chocolate covered bananas rolled in Arzu Original. Yummy!!!
Are your children getting enough whole grain? According to the Whole Grain Council, the average American eats less than one daily serving of whole grains, and over 40% of Americans never eat whole grains at all. YIKES!
So, how much whole grain is “enough”? The Whole Grains Council recommends eating “at least three 16g servings of whole grain every day.” Sounds good, but how can you easily figure out the amount of whole grains in a food? Look for the Whole Grains Council stamp. Every product bearing the Whole Grain Stamp contains at least half a serving (8g) of whole grains. Read the seal carefully to find out the number of whole grains in the serving.

ARZU was awarded the 100% whole grain certification by The Whole Grains Council. We are very excited to display the 100% Whole Grain Certification on Arzu. Did you know that with each serving of ARZU, you get 6 grams of fiber and 30 grams of whole grains? In fact, one serving of Arzu provides you with 30grams of the 48grams recommended daily consumption.
The Whole Grains Council is a national nonprofit consumer advocacy group working to increase consumption of whole grains for better health by encouraging manufacturers to create delicious whole grain products and helping consumers to find whole grain foods.
By providing our customers with the recognizable logo we take the guess work out of finding whole grains products. This is especially important to those on a Gluten-Free diet with limited grain choices.
What’s the easiest way to find whole grain foods?
Look for the Whole Grain Stamp. It’s on thousands of products on your grocer’s shelves. It clearly states the number of grams of whole grain in every serving of the food, making it simple to get to 48g daily. An even easier approach: Skip the math, and just make sure every grain food you buy bears the Whole Grain Stamp. The Stamp always guarantees a half serving or more of whole grains per portion, so “following the Stamp” as you choose six grain foods daily ensures that you’ll get at least three servings of whole grain. Try a few new whole grain products or experiment with new whole grain recipes.
